Rock
Climbing
The Mid-Atlantic states of Virginia, West Virginia,
and Maryland host some of the best rock climbing in
the country. The New River Gorge area has become internationally
famous over the past few years due to the enormous
amount of vertical cliffs available to rock climb
or rappel. The Appalachian Trail offers many places
to do a little bouldering.

Road
Biking
New
River - Spruce Run
You'll go along the River for a nice stretch and then
go for a short distance on gravel road before turning
onto Spruce Run. There are many variations on the
route out in this general direction.
Distance: 31.82 mi.
Mountain
Lake
Many in the area bike climb the road to Mountain Lake.
Challenging, but just imagine the view when you get
there. This loop is just like the New River route,
except for a 14 mile detour over a 4000 ft mountain.
It climbs up the so-called "back side" of
Mountain Lake, and then descends the "regular"
way. Legend has it that this hefty climb was used
by the Tour DuPont years ago.
Distance: 45.4 mi.
Sweet
Springs / Potts Creek
This is a monster of a ride, with six large climbs,
the first two on dirt roads. The first over John's
Creek Mtn. is the steepest and most difficult, while
the second over Potts Mtn. to Waiteville, WV is much
easier. Once there, you can turn right and ride along
Potts Creek directly to Paint Bank (you go by a farm
with buffalo and strange, shaggy cows...), or continue
straight over Peters Mtn., on to Gap Mills. If it's
a windy day, the 10 mile stretch along WV Rt. 3 heading
to Sweet Springs is incredibly fast and flat. Following
a long crossing of Potts Mtn., ride through Maggie
Valley and back over Johns Creek Mtn. Each of the
climbs rewards you with great views from the top (especially
Potts) and fast, curvy descents.
The ride is shown starting and stopping at Newport
(The Rec. Center on 42 is a good place to park); riding
from Blacksburg on 460 adds about 20 more miles to
the totals given.
Sweet Springs Loop Distance: 84.2 mi
Potts Creek Loop Distance: 69.6 mi

Whitewater
Rafting/Kayaking
When
you're planning your adventure whitewater travels,
the obvious choice is the awe-inspiring New River
and the Gauley.
Matt
Young is president of the
Kayak and Canoeing Club at Virginia Tech and
offers this: "For kayaking
in the area, Wolf Creek which runs into the
New River at Narrows has been run many times by a
bunch of people in the area. I would rate it a class
IV creek. Mill Creek also runs into the New at Narrows,
but on the other side of the river. It is one of the
more difficult runs in the area. As far as I know
there are only 3 people who have run it. Little Stony
Creek (creek that has the cascades on it) has been
run both below the cascades and above. I haved heard
that Big Stony Creek is a good intermediate run, but
I have never run it. All of these creeks can be looked
at in detail on a DeLorme Gazzetteer of Virginia."
We encourage anyone interested in running these small
waters to get as much information as possible as well
as permission. Some of the put-ins
may be located on private property. These
are intended for the experienced and highly skilled
kayaker, not the novice.
