Giles
County offers an abundance of great viewing areas.
Cascade Falls is one of the favorite places
of tourist and locals alike. Located in the Little
Stony Creek Valley in Pembroke, the Cascades has two
different two mile trails which lead up to the picturesque
68 foot Cascades waterfall (this height is estimated).
It is a four mile round trip hike. It features restrooms,
picnic tables and grills. With an elevation of 2,200
to 2,900 feet the views are spectacular and the hike
moderate. The Cascades is part of the George Washington
& Jefferson National Forests. Dismal
Creek is a ten foot multi-tiered waterfall
. In the winter the frozen falls are particularly
beautiful. Dismal Creek is also a stocked trout stream.
Located in Giles County on Rt.201. It is easily accessed
from the road or from a side trail off of the Appalachian
Trail Glen Alton
Recently acquired by the
US Forest Service, Glen Alton is a 304 acre estate
that offers many diverse habitats. This site offers
a unique birding experience along trails that meander
through wetlands, riparian woodlands, hardwood forest,
open meadows, pond habitat and pine stands. Though
still a work in progress, Glen Alton is a wonderland
for the outdoor enthusiast.
Newport's
Bridges '
Giles County is home to three of the remaining eight
covered bridges in Virginia. The Sinking Creek Bridge
(1916), the Reynolds Bridge (1919) and the Link Bridge
(1912), which is on private property. These bridges
are located near Virginia's only official village,
Newport Village: which was listed as a national historic
landmark in 1994. To the residents of Giles County
they symbolize a bridge between the past and the present.
The Village of Newport is home to the oldest Agricultural
Fair in the state. The fair was first organized in
1936 as an educational enterprise and is held on the
second Friday and Saturday in August. Competitions
for livestock, grains and grasses, fruits and vegetables,
canning, sewing and flowers are a local favorite.
Jousting and horse pulling are exciting events as
well.
